Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is known as the Special Capital Region of Jakarta and is one of the world's leading megacities with a population of 9.5 million. However, the public transport system is not fully developed, and the city suffers from one of the world's largest traffic congestions on a daily basis.
With the hope of improving this traffic congestion, this train was introduced as a subway train, including an elevated section, connecting Bundaran HI Station in the center of Jakarta to Lebak Bulus Station in South Jakarta. (Approximately 16 km, including 6 underground stations and 7 elevated stations) On this project, 16 train sets/96 cars were delivered to PT MRT Jakarta, which is funded by the Special Capital Region of Jakarta government.
The train is a 6-car train with 1.5kV DC, 4M2T, and a maximum operating speed of 100km/h. The car body is 20m long and made of stainless steel, with 4 doors on each side to accommodate rush hour congestion. The train is designed to accommodate a maximum of 1,950 passengers, including 306 seats. This train runs every 5 minutes, making it a truly Mass Rapid Transit (MRT).
Regarding air conditioning, each car is equipped with two large-capacity air conditioning units, consideration that the train will be operated in a tropical environment directly below the equator,
The signaling system uses the CBTC method of ATO/ATP (Automatic Train Operation/Automatic Train Protection), and supports one-man operation, with the driver being able to check the video of the CCTV (monitoring cameras) installed on the platforms of each station from the driver’s cab. Basically, it is designed based on Japanese standards, and is very similar to Japanese commuter trains.
The opening ceremony for this train was held in March 2019, and the joy of Jakarta residents was reported in the Japanese media. So once if you ever visit Jakarta, please take a ride and experience its convenience.
