Purple Line is an commuter line (approximately 23 km, 16 stations) that opened in August 2016, connecting Tao Poon and Khlon Bang Phai stations in northern Bangkok.
A joint venture by Marubeni Corporation and Toshiba Corporation has secured a contract to provide total railway system for the Purple Line project in 2013 and J-TREC has supplied 21 sets of three car “sustina” commuter trains.
Purple Line is all stainless-steel commuter trains operated in fixed three-car train consist of Mc+T+Mc. The Interior has adopted all longitudinal seating arrangement on each side, with 4 bi-parting sliding doors, providing the wheelchair space at each car end. Power collection system employs a 750 Vdc third rail current collector. The main circuit is IGBT inverter controlled and has a maximum operating speed of 80 km/h with a maximum design speed of 100 km/h. The bogies are standard a track gauge of 1435 mm. The bogie design adopts bolsterless type with disc brakes and a wheelbase of 2100 mm. The applicable standards for the rolling stock design primarily follows international standards such as ISO, UIC, EN, and NFPA.
In addition, since Bangkok is hot and humid throughout the year, the trains are not equipped with heating system. Instead, the air conditioning units have a larger capacity than those used in Japan, at 81.4 kW (70,000 kcal/h) per car, and the seats are made of FRP to suit the climate.
※"sustina" is the brand name for the next-generation stainless steel train cars designed and manufactured by J-TREC, which have improved energy efficiency, safety, and maintainability. The Purple Line trains will be the first “sustina” trains for overseas markets.
