The EMU700 for suburban commuter services was manufactured by Nippon Sharyo, Ltd. for Taiwan Railway Administration.

The EMU700 railcars are successors to prototype vehicles manufactured by Nippon Sharyo, and are being produced in large numbers under Taiwan’s Industrial Cooperation Program by Taiwan Rolling Stock Co., Ltd., in which Nippon Sharyo has an equity share. To promote production, Nippon Sharyo provided overall technical support to Taiwan Rolling Stock and local component manufacturers. The project, which has attracted plenty of attention in Taiwan, aims to increase rail transport capacity there, especially on the island’s West Trunk Line.

The high-performance, 25 kV AC EMUs are equipped with a VVVF control system and have a maximum running speed of 110 km/h. The train’s distinctive nose has a coupler cover with an automatic opening and closing mechanism.
