Signing the contract with Bombardier Transportation in 1999, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation supplied electrical equipment for M-7 railcars.
The order was initially for 192 cars, but the customer later exercised its option to place additional orders a number of times.
By the time of the final lot in April 2007, equipment for a total of 1,172 railcars had been delivered, making a project of unprecedented scale.
Once mounted on the railcars, the electrical equipment has proved its exceptional reliability during throughout revenue service.
Especially when snow fell, the DC motor railcars often failed to operate, whereas M-7 cars with the new equipment were free from trouble and kept operational. Thus, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and its product gained considerable praise as a result.
The M-7 project was of major importance, involving the long-term delivery of a packaged selection of technically advanced propulsion equipment for a key sector of the U.S. market. The project was a milestone in market development in North America, and has since led to the receipt of other orders for new projects.
