Launch of commercial operations 1983

Kinkisharyo International, L.L.C. partnered with Itochu International Inc. to receive an order of 40 light rail vehicles (LRV) from Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) in November 1992. The vehicles were placed in service beginning in 1996. Since their launch, ridership more than doubled over what had been forecast initially. The Park and Ride system is said to have contributed greatly to this increase.
The LRV design concept promotes a futuristic look. The cars’ interiors and exteriors are stylish and original in design, greatly altering the image LRVs generally have.
