In 2006, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation received an order from Bombardier UK for air conditioning units to be installed on London Underground trains.
Trains equipped with the HVAC units began revenue service in August 2010.
The London Underground started operating inaugurated in 1863, making it the oldest subway system in the world.
It is one of the largest subway networks in the world, although though none of its trains had been air conditioned before.
The new subway cars were the first in the London network to have air conditioning, a fact played up considerably by the local media.
The agreement with Bombardier UK includes maintenance services for the air conditioning equipment until 2018 with later extension as option till 2033.
